Garden design has changed considerably over the last four decades. Years ago, no one really cared about their gardens, as long as there was some grass and plants. Gardens have now become an extension of our homes. Today we have colour and lots of it—a much wider selection of planting, lighting, and technology such as CGI’s, which we should embrace. If you are about to embark on a new garden project, here are some top tips.
Think about your garden as the whole space and how you are going to use it, rather than sections. What structures and colours do you want? Gardens can add as much as ten percent to the value of your home. Consider first impressions and creating the wow factor. Don’t clutter your garden or overfill it. Less is definitely more. Treat it like a canvas or painting; they have perspective; something is happening in the background and foreground. Gardens are the same: in the foreground, add structural plants; in the background, add larger evergreen plants so that you have greenery all year round.
Don’t overcomplicate the planting. Think of planting like food or going out for a meal; choose your favourite plants like you would choose your favourite meal; you will probably only have a handful of favourite restaurants, for example. It’s the same with plants. If your aspirations are greater than your budget, consider phasing them. Where does the sun rise and set, and what type of soil do you have? These factors will impact your planting and how well it grows. Garden trends at the moment are creating natural habitats and re-wilding, but be careful; wild flowers need a lot of attention; otherwise, some will completely take over your garden.
