A Room of One's Own: Inside Charlotte Perriand's Universe’: a literary-inspired talk

On Thursday, September 19th the Cassina Store London will set the stage for the talk ‘A Room of One's Own: Inside Charlotte Perriand's Universe’. Starting from the visionary work of Virginia Woolf, Pernette Perriand and Jacques Barsac will share unprecedented tales on Charlotte Perriand, explaining how she was able to establish herself among the most influential voices of twentieth-century design. The talk will be moderated by Caroline Roux, Art and Design writer, Financial Times, and Johanna Agerman Ross, Conran Foundation Chief Curator at the Design Museum and founder of Disegno.

The Cassina Perspective 2024: a unique display

For London Design Festival 2024, Cassina showcases its novelties at the Cassina Store London. With new proposals for all areas of the home, the interiors of the space also welcome a selection of novelties from the Cassina 2024 Collection, such as the iconic Cornaro sofa by Carlo Scarpa, and new designs by established names such as Michael Anastassiades, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and Patricia Urquiola, Cassina Art Director.

The store sets the stage for a unique display, where the new Indochine chaise longue is at the centre of a scenic representation dedicated to the designer’s attention to materials and expression of lightness, surrounded by the disassembled components of two of her models fluctuating in the space.

This model was first designed in November 1943, when Charlotte Perriand was in Indochina as the country's Director of Crafts. Forced for medical reasons to remain in bed during the final months of her pregnancy, she designed a chaise longue with armrests that would allow her to continue to read, write and design. Given the impossibility of finding chrome tubing during the Pacific War, this first exemplar was crafted in rattan and was never edited.

Today, Cassina gives shape to this iconic design, in close collaboration with Pernette Perriand-Barsac, crafting the structure of the chaise longue in painted tubular metal and, with a focus on circularity, using innovative materials in the upholstered parts. To ensure the utmost in comfort, the chaise longue’s cradle is equipped with elastic webbing that provides support to the seat, optimising its cosiness, in an invitation to relax. A welcoming topper with removable upholstery envelops this structure. Inside is soft padding made of recycled PET fibre, punctuated by a quilted motif, stitched from edge to edge.
