Happy Chinese New Year - Insider Insight

Happy Chinese New Year! On 22nd January, we are stepping into the Year of Rabbit – a year of hope, prosperity and peace. Sally Maier-Yip, Managing Director and Founder, 11K Consulting shares her insight!

From a luxury property market perspective, the year of Rabbit will be a year of opportunities, opening many doors to us all, as China has finally re-opened its closed borders after three years of closure.

Passengers can now enter China without quarantine. Optimism has risen. Life in China is now going back to normal.

China is also expected to outperform Asia (ex-Japan) due to its faster-than-anticipated reopening, continuing domestic policy support, and potential for stronger earnings growth, said Mark Haefele, Chief Investment Officer, UBS Global Wealth Management. For example, China’s property sector is expected to see 9.4% higher profits in 2023 after a 4.9% drop in 2022.

If you are thinking about attracting Chinese customers in 2023, here are a few things you need to consider:

  1.  Do I have a quality Chinese corporate brochure?

  2. Do I have a good online presence on Baidu, China’s Google?

  3. Am I building good relationship with the right Chinese intermediates such as private bankers, educators, immigration consultants and lawyers who are already working with those Chinese HNWIs and investors?

  4. Am I planning to attend relevant property-related conferences in China and Hong Kong this year, e.g. The Luxury Property Show, Design Week Shanghai, MIPIM Asia, etc.?

  5. Am I sharing regular insights and information about our services and market insights with the Chinese audiences on the key Chinese social media platforms such as WeChat, The Little Red Book (China’s Instagram), etc.?

sally’s top 5 tips for chinese new year

Finally, as we are celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit from 22nd January for 15 days, here are my 5 tips on what you can do for your Chinese counterparts and customers during this festive period:

  1. Create a branded Chinese New Year e-card and send it to your Chinese counterparts.

  2. Send them a Chinese New Year gift if you can – e.g. a nicely-wrapped food box with chocolate, biscuits, tea, etc.

  3. Host a Chinese New Year meal in a nice Chinese restaurant

  4. Give red envelops to the children of your Chinese counterparts – with small money (e.g. £10) in it

  5. Dress in red (our lucky colour) to show your understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture

On this note, I wish you all a very happy year of the Rabbit, full of good fortune, good health and happiness.  新年快乐(Xin Nian Kuai Le)!
