In celebration of International Women’s Month, The LPF is shining a spotlight on our rising female stars, recognising their talent and potential while addressing systemic challenges for women in the industry. Among these trailblazers and an LPF Rising Star is Toni Hughes at Howden Insurance.
In the interview that follows, we delve into Toni’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.
Hi Toni, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?
Pinpointing a single proudest moment is tough, when I reflect on my career I see small pockets of proud moments that stand out. Every day brings its own set of small victories, whether it's successfully resolving a client's tricky or complex situation, witnessing our team's resilience amidst industry changes, or simply being recognized for our efforts, each accomplishment adds to my sense of pride. I'm a big believer you need to find gratitude in the small wins not just the big ones. If I were pressed to highlight one particular source of pride, it would be my role as one of the few Female New Business Sales representatives in the insurance sector. It's a testament to my dedication and expertise in a competitive field, and I take great pride in that achievement.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Returning to work after maternity leave was undoubtedly challenging. A year away from the industry, combined with the demands of balancing work and family, took its toll on my confidence. Seeking guidance from a mentor was a turning point for me. Having someone like Gemma Deavall, who understood my journey and offered support, helped me regain my footing. Surrounding myself with, not only, supportive women but allies of women, has been crucial in rebuilding my confidence and navigating the complexities of both work and motherhood.
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
There simply isn’t enough of us. Long gone are the days where men ruled the property industry in a pinstripe suit. Women bring so many qualities to the luxury property industry, patience, empathy, problem solving, multi-taskers and natural team players. Embracing diversity and creating a more inclusive environment is essential for any industry's progress. By fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are valued, we can pave the way for a more equitable future.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
My best friend is my biggest supporter, she thinks I’m superwoman and I think she is too, this isn’t because we’re unrealistic we just believe so much in what the other can achieve and will do our part to ensure they do. We love a debate especially around attitudes towards women, the stigmas in the workplace and indifferences woman have to constantly challenge. So many of these challenges are so ingrained in society we’re not even aware it’s a thing, having open conversations with colleagues and friends can break down some of these barriers and help you face them head on with support.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
If there's one lesson I've learned along the way, it's that you can create a fulfilling life on your own terms. Finding a supportive network of women who inspire and guide you is essential. Surrounding yourself with positive influences and staying true to yourself will help you navigate the ups and downs of both your personal and professional journey. Also, ensure that you prioritize YOU, a career is important but you are more than a female employee, you are a mother, a friend, a sister a wife and a daughter too.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
As I look to the future, I hope to continue growing both professionally and personally. I aspire to excel in my role as an insurance broker while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Building meaningful relationships and making a positive impact in my community are also priorities for me. Ultimately I want to be a strong role model for my son who is my world.
