Building Acoustics in Luxury Settings - Clarke Saunders Acoustics

At Clarke Saunders Acoustics, everyday is a school day and on Tuesday 26th July 2022, LPF Members will be treated to a Masterclass in Building Acoustics in Luxury Settings!

At Clarke Saunders they develop engineering solutions to physical problems tempered by their elite experience of the practical difficulties of implementation. Complicated measures have their place, but simple, elegant solutions are often the most effective. If you are an LPF Member and would like to sign up please email events@theluxurypropertyforum.com!

Holistic Acoustic Design

If done well, no-one should know we’ve been there at all. If overlooked, bogey words like ‘mitigate’ and ‘remedial’ creep in to the conversation, design becomes impeded, and aspirations become compromised. Unacceptable!

Acoustic excellence and aural comfort involve a harmonious mix of science and art, the objective and subjective. While there may be regulatory requirements, these may be necessarily surpassed by personal experience and desire deserving of bespoke design. To successfully implement a partnership between the aural with the visual design aesthetic, architectural, material and structural considerations will be required, which when integrated at the inception of strategic definitions can empower our clients to control their internal soundscape.

Floors, Floor Coverings & Footfall Noise

Cosmopolitan life provides unparalleled vibrancy bringing cultural dynamism  to your very doorstep with art, entertainment and excitement available at any time of day or night. This shouldn’t, however, deprive anyone of solace, respite and tranquillity that ‘home’ can provide. A seeming challenge, perhaps, in central London where an inner sanctum may share separating structures with several neighbours who may equally share a passion for what the city offers although not necessarily share the same diurnal pattern.

Appropriate sound insulation strategies: floor, wall, isolation design, when integrated into architectural intent can be tailored to provide desired separation while avoiding alienation of the occupants, whether these are neighbouring dwellings or other family members. For example, vertical separation to provide privacy and prevent disturbance is a key consideration in moving beyond regulatory and contractual compliance to address high quality aspirations and bespoke occupant-specific requirements perhaps to facilitate luxury wooden flooring.

Internal Acoustic Soundscapes

Building upon the tranquillity of home, it is commonplace to control our visual soundscape by embracing feng shui, interior design and lighting scenes… what about aural soundscape? Acoustic design isn’t necessarily suppression of sound but also the control and shaping of it to provide meaningful control to a client’s aural experience.  The manipulation of sound, ventilation and cooling plant can provide helpful masking effects.  However, when paired alongside other soundfield components, can be integrated with the room acoustics characteristics and audio visual systems to deliver a seamless internal soundscape, providing a no longer static experience but one that can be tuned to suit mood or function.

Critical Listening Spaces

This is the terminology we use to discuss rooms in which acoustics takes centre stage.  In luxury residences it applies to screening rooms, media rooms, music practice and performance areas, bars, party rooms and so on.  While this is an area in which we co-ordinate very closely with AV consultants, it may also require more architectural and structural forethought than appreciated. Club rooms adjacent to bedrooms come with clear and obvious challenges. What may be less clear is how sound can enter and travel great distances through a structure to re-radiate in potentially inappropriate places, raising the risk of annoyance and nuisance. Remedial action will necessitate significant unnecessary cost, loss of function, compromised design and use for clients. Early adoption of acoustic principles at the very outset of the design can help shape the end-product to realise desires and empower enjoyment. Bespoke, high-end engineering can be tailored to and seamlessly integrated into homes. We have been witness to clients pride in boasting not only an Odeon, Dolby or THX Specification home entertainment system but also being host to the engineering prowess that enables this level of luxury entertainment.

the masterclass

On Tuesday 26th July 2022 at 12pm, LPF Members will be treated to a Masterclass in Acoustics! Experts Clarke Saunders Acoustics will welcome up to LPF Members to a virtual masterclass hosted by Ed Clarke, CSA’s Managing Director. Ed will be joined by other members of CSA’s consulting team to address specific areas of expertise and provide a different perspective.
