Member of the Week - Appleyard & Trew

Introducing Matthew Steggall, LLP Partner, Appleyard and Trew

What does your company do and what makes it special?

Appleyard & Trew was established in 1969 as a Partnership of Quantity Surveyors. Whilst originally established as traditional Quantity Surveyors, additional core services now include Project Management, Employer’s Agent, CDM Advisers, Building Surveying, Fund Monitoring and Net Zero Carbon Consultancy.

Appleyard & Trew is owned by its Partners, we have no external shareholders to answer to and therefore avoid the pressures that this sometimes creates. Each project is undertaken and personally led by a partner and coordinated using specialist teams of surveyors from our four offices across the UK.

What led you to your current position?

I was working at another Consultancy in London, where I was Associate for several years, and getting frustrated at not seeing progress. I also made contact with a Project Manager who specialised in Super High End Residential, and this led to multiple commissions for the practice. Having had an insight into this sector I decided to move to Appleyard and Trew and utilise my expertise and experience in growing our standing within this market.

Describe your typical day?

Appleyard and Trew pride themselves on each Partner being Client facing. Therefore, my typical day involves corresponding and updating all my current Clients on progress on their schemes.

I will also contact connections established over the years, and through networks such as the Luxury Property Forum, and enhance business relationships.

Finally, being a Partner of a multi-office company, the management of staff and day to day running of the company takes a lot of time. I am keen that the workplace is a happy environment, and heed the old adage of “Happy Staff are Productive Staff”

Are you currently working on any exciting projects?

I currently have a very high end project in Oxshott, Surrey working alongside Lees Associates, Accouter and Morgan Rae.  The house is within a private estate for a high-net-worth Client and will be very impressive once this is completed.

Appleyard and Trew also have a number of projects in the early stages, one involving a gorgeous John Nash Villa near Regents Park, with Adam Richards Architects, which will be very exciting to see the design progress to tender over the coming months.

What has been your career highlight so far?

Career highlight must be making Partner within 7 months of joining Appleyard and Trew.

There are a lot of people who end up stuck in a role or Company, but do not want to change for fear of failure. I was pushed by my partner to take that step, and whilst it can be daunting; to see the faith I had in myself, and as a Professional be proven by such quick success is very satisfying. I would urge anyone in a similar position to take that chance.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to venture into your area of the luxury property industry?

Keep learning every day and from as many different people as possible.

Professionals who have made it within the Luxury Property Industry have done so through years of hard work, they have seen most eventualities and outcomes. They are a font of knowledge and will be able to offer help and advice. Listen to them, learn from them and you will succeed.

What do you love most about the luxury property industry?

As a Quantity Surveyor working in the Luxury Property Industry, my role is to ensure my Client achieves value for money. However, with the budgets usually associated within the industry, especially the Super Prime Residential, it allows Architects and Designers to become much more innovative and artistic in their designs. The results are stunning and make the hard work worthwhile.

What does “luxury” mean to you?

Luxury, especially in relation to property, to me means the very best, the most beautiful, the houses and homes we all desire. I adore working in this sector and to see stunning designs come to life.
