Introducing Akash Desai, Director and Principal Protection Adviser, OnPoint Mortgages
OnPoint Mortgages is a finance brokerage specialising in funding for the self-employed, contractors, those with complex income structures, the asset rich, property investors and developers. We focus on traditional values such as client relationship and providing clear expert advice. Our advisers all have a similar background and we keep a close-knit team to ensure a luxury service. It is the quality of the customer experience, despite buying or building a home being a stressful process, that has allowed us to retain customers and grow via referrals and recommendations.
What led you to your current position?
I was employed as a project manager for 10 years but at the same time I was setting up various businesses mostly in the property and property investor space. I noticed that it was difficult for investors to obtain the required level of advice when investing in real estate, which is when I partnered with a friend and experienced broker Lee Langley to create the company. Even in this increasingly digital age brokers are increasing their market share as lenders criteria, peoples’ circumstances and the economic environment become ever more complex and consumers seek guidance.
Describe a typical working day in your life…
I realise that my start to the day is not typical, I am an early riser waking up at 3:30am and then I exercise for two hours to set the right tone to the day as health is important to me. I then move onto the most important work task before the kids wake up. I resume work at 8am focusing on the higher value tasks, such as important emails that require more brain space, research or protection insurance quotes. From 9am onwards it is business as usual which involves talking to clients about their requirements and supporting the team.
Are you currently working on any exciting projects?
My focus this year is protection insurance for business owners. The protection gap in the UK stands at about 2.2 billion. People will rightly cover their car, homes and pets but often forget to sufficiently protect the most important asset of them all, themselves! I am excited to work with existing and new clients to safeguard their assets, wealth, family and businesses.
What has been your career highlight so far?
Successfully building and selling two businesses was a great achievement and has taught me a lot. The highlight for me however is that OnPoint Mortgages is approaching its 5th birthday. To have helped thousands of customers through their financial journey and for them to return to us each time they review their mortgage, raise capital, move home or invest in a new property is a real accomplishment.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to venture into your area of the luxury property industry?
Business is a team sport and nothing worth developing, especially in the luxury sector, is a solo effort. Start conversations, create relationships, be of value and the rest will come.
What do you love most about the luxury property industry?
Working with experts who share our ambition to be the best at what they do.
What does “luxury” mean to you?
In terms of relating this to our clients, the answer is to do with the feeling of everything being taken care off by the experts or to know that support is always available. We understand that our clients time is highly valuable which is why we try to make the process as easy as possible.
