In celebration of International Women’s Month, The LPF is shining a spotlight on our rising female stars, recognising their talent and potential while addressing systemic challenges for women in the industry. Among these trailblazers and an LPF Rising Star is Carina Nicola Kramer, Project Architect at Openstudio Architects.
In the interview that follows, we delve into Carina’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.
What is your proudest career moment so far?
Winning competitions for ideas and awards for built work is always a moment where one is able to feel proud of the hard work and effort put into projects. The recognition one receives for comitment to quality and smart design work despite numerous pressures is always satisfactory. It encourages one to continue believing in one's work, aim high and not loose momentum even if projects often take years to realise with multiple hurdles to overcome along the way.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Often! Being a woman in the construction industry is not easy. One needs to be even more prepared in order to gain the respect of consultants and contractors. One has to be constantly improving one's technical knowledge so that you can stand your ground in any debate and ensure quality of a project and design intent is not eroded but enhanced.
Becoming a mother and returning to work can also knock one's confidence. However working with the right team, persevering and learning to balance priorities is a day by day learning curve. I am very lucky to work with amazing women who are all mothers and have been incredibly supportive and understanding as I find my feet.
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
General recognition that we are experienced and able to deliver a high quality product. Confidence is an aspect but I think it's more about being able to communicate effectively and inspire people to get behind your idea. It's quite obvious that the pay gap and opportunities offered between men and women needs to improve.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
Jennifer Beningfield, the principal and director of Openstudio has without a doubt been my biggest supporter, role model and mentor professionally since I moved to London in 2015. She incredibly smart, capable and talented as an architect. She keeps open lines of communication in a way that enables one to understand the overall workings of the practice, the projects and where one's role can grow within those dynamics. She has always believed I can do things even when I didn't believe I had the ability - in this way my professional growth has been exponential while working with her. She leads by example and is never afraid of hard work or learning more which makes one feel that you are part of a team which I find empowering.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
Have a vision of where you want to be and do not be afraid of hard work, the ups and the downs and the determination required in your journey to getting there.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
Looking forward I am excited about the types of projects and collaborations possible. I never want to stop working with interesting people on dynamic projects that add value to individuals, communities and the environment.
