Hi Sally, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?
After working for 20yrs in the textile industry, I joined forces with an admiral business women, Gilly Ligertwood, who also happens to by a life-long friend. Together we are taking the linen world by storm. Making this career decision made be realise the importance of doing what you love surrounded by ambitious, aspiring people. Striking the right work/life balance has become very important, and has brought the best out in me and what I subsequently bring to the company in terms of passion, ambition and most importantly creativity.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Overcoming self-doubt as a creative person has been a transformative journey for me. In previous jobs, uncertainty could cloud ideas, hindering progress. However, through perseverance and embracing failures as stepping stones, I learned to trust my creative instincts . Embracing the iterative nature of creativity has allowed me to view setbacks as opportunities to refine and improve, giving me the confidence to take risks and set ambitious goals.
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
Women in this sector can face challenges in making a name for themselves and being taken seriously. There have been challenges in the past with regard to gender bias and unequal opportunities, however I feel that there is currently a very strong network of women in business, who are doing great things and beginning to be recognised for it. We are a force to be reckoned with! There are current and emerging successful women in the industry who are breaking barriers and paving the way for others. I think recognizing and promoting women's achievements are very important steps toward fostering equal opportunities in the luxury property sector.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
My Grandpa was my biggest supporter. He was an architect/artist who encouraged me to follow my dreams of becoming a textile designer. It was clear, from an early age, that we shared a love for design. He took me to Paris, London and many an exhibition. He arrange a trip to India for work experience, a time in life I will never forget. He inspired me so much but was also critical which in turn, taught me how to set goals and aim high. He set the path, of which I have followed throughout life and I will be eternally grateful.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
It is difficult to mention just one...Believe in yourself - trust your abilities and instincts and have confidence in your potential. Everyone is capable of achieving great things. Embrace challenges - challenges are opportunities for growth. Don't shy away from difficulties, instead, view them as opportunities to learn and improve. Build a network by cultivating professional relationships, be resilient, continue to learn, strive for a balance between career ambitions and personal well-being and finally support other women! Lift others as you climb, support and celebrate fellow women in the industry.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
Looking ahead, my future in the luxury property sector as a designer of luxury linens, holds exciting possibilities and opportunities. As the demand for high-end properties and bespoke designs continues to grow, my expertise in creating luxurious linens positions me/us at the intersection of two thriving industries. I want to remain innovative and immerse myself in emerging technology and continue to refine our products for sustained success. I want to help take the Gilly Nicolson brand to new heights and disrupt the market. We are in a niche market so becoming prominent figures within this market would put any of that self doubt, from my younger years, to rest!
