Among these trailblazers and an LPF Rising Star is Emily Strutt, Design Engineer at Bill Cleyndert & Company.
In the interview that follows, we delve into Emily’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.
Hi Emily, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?
The proudest moment in my career was when I applied for a promotion position within the business. I had a thought that I maybe wasn't ready for the position, however wanted to apply anyway. In that moment of applying, I committed to my growth and development and understood where I wanted my career to go. My application was taken really well, it strengthened my relationships with the management team and put me on a personal development plan to the role, which I was officially promoted to at the end of last year. The journey has been rewarding & I am learning everyday. If I hadn't set aside time and belief in myself to send my application, I wouldn't be as far along as I am now, and I am proud of that.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
I have always struggled with confidence and self doubt! I think a lot of women can relate to this. I have gained confidence by learning "there is no such thing as a stupid question". Asking questions shows you are interested and want to learn, it should not be seen as a weakness. Listening to others when they compliment my work has also helped, it is easy to hold on to negative feedback and brush off positive comments but you need to remind yourself of the good you have done and can/will do!
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
Sometimes it is hard to be heard in a room full of louder people. I am lucky to have male colleagues that hold others accountable if I am ever spoken over. Once they realise how saying something small like: "hold on, Emily was just saying something, please continue Emily" can open up the discussion and meeting. This validation gives women confidence to share their ideas! So many great visions/thoughts can be lost simply by not giving women a chance to be heard.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
Inside work my biggest cheerleader is our Marketing Manager Abbi. We are in completely different departments but she always makes sure to celebrate our professional and personal wins. My managing director Mandi is another supporter, she took a chance on hiring me when I was younger with really low self-esteem, but she has coached me through it and taught me not to believe my imposter syndrome. Outside of work is my partner James, no matter how hard a day I've had he always picks me up and reminds me how far I've come.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
My advice to the next generation of women in the industry is to not be afraid to be heard or take up space, your voice and thoughts are as important as the next persons. Believe in your visions and ideas, put them forward. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions! It's exciting to see more women enter the luxury bespoke furniture industry, it's going to be a great future!
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
I would like my career to continue in the luxury furniture industry. My company has shown commitment to develop me professionally and I look forward to growing with them. I have a lot to learn and experience as a Design Engineer, but it is important to me to continue learning and share knowledge with the team so we are all the best we can be.
