Hi Harriet, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?
When I have a chance to reflect, I can't quite believe I am heading towards the milestone of 10 years since my career began. In that time, my main goal has been to gain as much exposure as possible to build my experience. However, one thing immediately comes to mind when considering what my proudest achievement so far has to be. The APC is such a vital achievement at the start of your career and I was determined that I was going to succeed, and quickly! I enrolled the month after I joined my first company and successful passed exactly two years later. As far as what it taught me- the APC is just the start, but commitment and dedication will continue to pay off. During the early stages of my career, I gained a huge amount of experience and had great colleagues that championed my career development.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Speaking honestly, confidence has always been something I have struggled with, and still do to this day! For me, my confidence comes with knowledge and preparation. It's much easier to walk in to a room full of people knowing what you are about to discuss/ present when you have confidence in the detail that sits behind that. Over the years, I have also developed my ability to maintain a view on the bigger picture and ensure that the overall strategy is right for the project. But, I don't believe you can have confidence in the strategy if the detail has been overlooked. And finally, it is important to reflect on what you have achieved- a lot of knowledge and experience comes from projects that have had challenges. At the time, these may not feel like achievements, but the way you overcome these gives you the confidence for next time. And next time will always be more successful than the first time!
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
I think the key challenge for women is access to the industry. Whilst I have seen a notable increase in women in the industry over the last 10 years, there is still a way to go. To choose a career and be successful in that career, you need role models. If you view senior leadership as male dominated, or company cultures as male dominated, your career aspirations can be restricted to fit the norm. The industry needs to appeal to young women who have a passion for construction, where they can see that the sky is the limit. Seeing more women in senior leadership roles, driving innovation, and championing the attributes that they bring to a project or organisation inspires the next generation. I have been lucky to have worked with many inspiring women at Jackson Coles, and hope that one day I might just be that role model to the next generation.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
My Family are my biggest support, they push me to want to be the best version of myself.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
Nothing beats knowledge- soak it up, take as much as you can from those around you- ask the 'silly' questions.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
My future is to be the best I can be- provide a level of service to clients I can be proud of, and continue to be in a position where I am working on exciting projects with interesting people. Within my company and my network, I hope to be there for mentorship and advice to help other young women achieve a career they can be proud of.
