In an industry rife with gender disparities, The LPF is committed to positive change, empowering women and making the industry better for the next generation. In celebration of International Women’s Month, The LPF is shining a spotlight on our rising female stars, recognising their talent and potential while addressing systemic challenges for women in the industry. Among these trailblazers and an LPF Rising Star is Megan Sprake, Quantity Surveyor at Grangewood.
In the interview that follows, we delve into Megan’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.
Hi Megan, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?
Being lead surveyor on my first £1 million+ project is definitely my proudest achievement. It was a prime hotel project spanning over six floors, and the work varied a lot, which gave me exposure to different disciplines. It taught me that I am capable of taking on bigger projects and has given me the confidence to do so going forwards.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
When I first started working on bigger projects, I felt out of my depth. But with reassurance from both my Director and colleagues around me, I began to realize that I was capable of carrying out these projects. By pushing myself onto larger, more complex projects and building a support network at Grangewood, I gained the confidence to excel in my role.
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
I think the main challenge lies in changing the external perception of the industry. Prior to working in the industry, I believed it was dominated by men, but I have met and worked with many great women. Encouraging more women to pursue careers in the field and highlighting the diversity within it is key to overcoming gender challenges.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
My parents have always been my biggest supporters. Throughout my life, they encouraged me to try new things and have confidence in myself. Celebrating achievements and encouraging me to work hard has helped me a lot in my career.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
I would tell young women to believe in themselves and not be put off by working in a 'male-dominated industry.' It's essential to remember that there is a place for everyone, as long as you believe in yourself and your abilities.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
I want to continue expanding my knowledge and improving my skillset. By working on different types of projects, I hope to gain exposure to different disciplines and undertake higher-value projects with luxury finishes. I enjoy working on these projects the most.
