Among these trailblazers and an LPF Rising Star is Sarah Bradsell, Aftercare Manager at SMC.

In the interview that follows, we delve into Sarah’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.

Sarah Bradsell

Aftercare Manager at SMC

Sarah Bradsell is a shining example of a rising star in the luxury property industry. Nominated by Kevin Wilton at SMC, Sarah leads our Aftercare Team with remarkable finesse, overseeing a dynamic team of 15 individuals. Her journey at SMC began humbly at the reception desk in 2015, but her ascent through the ranks has been nothing short of inspirational. Despite initially lacking familiarity with the industry and the intricacies of home automation, Sarah has swiftly acquired the expertise necessary to effectively manage her team.

Beyond her proficiency in technology, Sarah's resilience and determination shine brightly. As a formidable female leader in a predominantly male-dominated company and industry, she embodies the essence of strength, authenticity, and ambition. Her presence serves as testament to her unwavering character and unwavering drive.

Hi Sarah, so great to have you here. Please could you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?

I am very proud to have been a part of the development of our Aftercare department over the past 9 years and witness the progress we’ve made in that time. We’ve significantly grown the support desk team, invested in additional technical resource, launched our own service app, and implemented a bespoke ticketing system. Watching the personal development of each member of the team (myself included) has also been really rewarding. It’s taught me that so much can be accomplished through hard work and the trust and support of your colleagues.

Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?

It’s taken me a long time to build confidence, in both work and my personal life. I still have those ‘imposter syndrome’ moments, more often than I’d like to admit, but being part of a company where I am listened to and trusted has really helped to negate some those anxieties. I’m also surrounded by people who are more than happy to impart their wisdom and take the time to explain the more technical elements of what we do. I think confidence for me comes through understanding as much as possible and the application of that knowledge.

What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?

There is a noticeable lack of women in the industry, especially within the construction/installation sector. It’s often the case that I am the only female (and queer) presence in the room when I’m on a project site or in a client meeting. Things are progressing, slowly, but the industry could really benefit from more diversity in general. At SMC we are trying to bridge these gaps. We hold quarterly women only networking events and our directors are spending time at local schools and colleges to spread the word about what we do, and encourage the next generation to get involved – regardless of race, economic background, gender, or sexuality. I believe this is a societal issue that can only be improved through education, and giving women the same opportunities that men have.

Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?

There’s too many to name within the industry, but everyone at SMC that I’ve worked with over the years, who have taught me so much, thank you for your friendship, patience, and guidance. I also have to give a shout out to Steve Moore. He’s personally taken the time to nurture my progress within the company and created a workplace that is safe and inclusive. Empowerment comes from within, but SMC is a family and to have that at work is really special and has allowed me to flourish. Outside of the office, my sister is the one who keeps me motivated and on track. She’s my biggest champion and always there to support me and offer advice. I would not be where I am without her and am very lucky to have her as my best friend.

Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?

Set career goals and tick them off when they’re done, then make new ones! These don’t need to be big statements, like ‘get a promotion’, but things that you can work on to track your progress and show what you’re bringing to the table. It takes time, but if you’re passionate and driven then you will get to where you want to be. Stand your ground and never doubt your ability to succeed, you are the only person holding you back.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?

I would like our Aftercare department to be the biggest in our sector, and we are well on our way to achieving this. By continuing to invest in the team and expand our client base I think we have a promising future ahead of us. For me, this means listening to the feedback from my team, improving the current processes we have in place and always pushing for progress.
