INTRODUCING TIM COLSTON, CEO, TENTH AVENUE
What does your company do and what makes it special?
We provide luxury gyms and fitness solutions to UHNW families and professional sport. I have 30 years experience in the fitness industry and use that experience to guide and support my clients. Very few people really know what they need in their gym and it is my responsibility to listen to the client to understand their needs and then provide a turnkey solution. We are discrete and offer a truly bespoke service.
What led you to your current position?
Ever since I left school I have always been interested in fitness and sport and started life as a fitness instructor. I soon realised that being confined in a gym was not for me so I started a career in fitness equipment sales which took me all over the UK. Before long I was the MD of a leading US fitness equipment manufacturer and I ran the UK operation. After 15 fantastic years at the helm I decided I wanted to carve out a business of my own and having supplied gyms to most of the Premiership football clubs I saw an opportunity to supply the players themselves. Before long I was supplying some of the most famous faces in football and establishing myself as a go to person for both discretion and knowledge. As the business has grown over the last 10 years it has naturally branched out from just professional sport to private families.
Describe a typical working day in your life…
I have a varied diary which I why I love what I do so much. Some days I am meeting with clients to understand their project, other days it is at the desk working with my small team to design the gyms. We use a 3D design package that brings the space to life and we can build up the proposition in stages. I have always enjoyed networking and in our role supplying HNW families we cannot openly market ourselves using past work as case studies to this end networking with likeminded professionals is how I develop my business and my diary is often loaded with events where I can get to meet new people and catch up with associates.
Are you currently working on any exciting projects?
Superyacht Fitness is a new venture which I started at the end of the summer and was set up to cater for my existing clients who have Superyachts. What has become immediately apparent is the need for advise and support for the Superyacht sector at large. We are in the process of developing our offering to support crew welfare as this is becoming a real problem and if we can help the young crew when they are struggling in confined spaces then that makes me very happy.
What has been your career highlight so far?
Too many to pick out one but to watch a lot of elite level sportspeople deliver on the pitch knowing that I have in a small way helped them is always a thrill. I only had to watch England at the World Cup to see this.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to venture into your area of the luxury property industry?
Network network and network. Relationships is how the world works and never more so than in the luxury property industry.
What do you love most about the luxury property industry?
Meeting new people and learning about their business.
What does “luxury” mean to you?
Good question. Luxury to me is to deliver something truly bespoke in a discrete way with absolute attention to detail and always with a smile on your face.
