In the interview that follows, we delve into Hannah’s experiences, shedding light on her journey and need to make the luxury property industry more inclusive and equitable future for the next generation of women.
Hi Hannah, please could you start by telling us your proudest career moment so far?
The past year has been my greatest success in my education, work and extracurricular pursuits. Obtaining my degree in BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management and also accomplishing the title of the 13th youngest female chartered surveyor in the world is a testament to my skills and rapid progression in the industry. I was highly commended in the rising star category at the CN Awards 2023,recognized as Trainee of the Year, most valued business contributor two years running and passionate about giving back through charity initiatives and raising £150,000 for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics following the loss of my mum in 2021 and the Lighthouse club. This year has taught me to never give up on my goals no matter the setbacks and the ever growing list of achievements is something I am incredibly proud of and hope to continue to add to in my new position at Morgan Rae.
Have you faced moments of doubt in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Luckily for me I have always been quite a confident person. Receiving constructive criticism has always been something I enjoyed, I always want to do and be better at the task at hand and feel that my confidence lacks when I feel I am not performing well. Having the constant support of my peers and employer ensures I feel valued and am on the correct path to success. To date I have achieved and surpassed every goal I have set myself and aim to keep this trend in my new role. Being recognised and commended for my efforts pushes me to always strive for more.
What do you think are the main challenges women face in the luxury property industry, and how can they be addressed?
Women in the industry face unconscious bias and lack of representation in leadership roles because of how male dominant the industry is. Ensuring that companies support women and show that they too are capable of success is the stepping stone to change. Mentoring and support networks for women are an important tool to address these issues. Morgan Rae already have a large proportion of women and I am looking forward to joining a team that promotes a culture that values and respects the contributions of women in the industry which is crucial in creating a more equitable environment. Sharing my career path with students in schools also provides a female perspective and a story of success as a woman in the industry.
Who has been your biggest supporter, and how have they empowered you?
My mum was always my biggest supporter by offering unwavering encouragement, believing in my abilities even when I doubted yourself, providing emotional support during challenges, and celebrating my successes. She empowered me by instilling confidence, teaching valuable life lessons, advocating for my dreams and aspirations, and being a role model of strength and courage. Her love and support played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today, empowering me to pursue my goals and overcome obstacles with determination and resilience. Everything I do within my career and personal life is to honour everything she taught me and share these lessons with those that look up to me as a role model.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to young women starting their careers?
My time in the construction industry has only just begun and I feel I have already achieved so much despite the many set backs I have faced. My advice to young women is to use those that doubt you as motivation, you are capable of whatever you set your mind to. The right resources are available throughout the large network of people within the industry you just have to have the confidence to ask.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future?
The main areas I hope to continue having a positive impact on within the industry are inspiring the younger generation into the industry and raising awareness for alcoholism. I have collaborated closely with multiple schools to attend career days to explain my role as a surveyor and promote work experience to give an insight into the industry which is something I wish I had when I was younger and will continue to attend these events. Since sharing my experience of losing my mum, I have been inundated with positive feedback on the information that I have shared. Following the Alcohol Awareness workshops I deliver 100% of attendees confirmed they had learnt something they didn’t know about alcoholism and now felt comfortable that they could signpost someone in need to the correct support or be there to listen and I will continue to share this information. I am also currently working closely with the National family drug and alcohol courts to put together a support programme for recovering alcoholics . My aim is to make the reunification process as smooth as possible for the parents and children. This includes making resources such as financial advice, budget friendly meals, education for coping mechanisms to deal with stress and funding for school uniforms available to them. This is just the beginning of the difference I hope to make so no child has to go through what I had to. I hope to continue my charitable endeavours and my own progression within Morgan Rae to a more senior level with the support of Luke and James and also continue to develop and solidify my relationships within the industry. I also hope to become the youngest female to achieve FRICS status. There is a variety of great projects in the pipeline which I am looking forward to delivering alongside the team at Morgan Rae. I aspire to inspire the future generations that are looking for a career in construction and dedicated to ensuring that the correct support is put in place for apprentices and trainees to facilitate this.
